Writer-director Crystal Moselle is celebrated for crafting perspective-shifting stories about people who defy social expectations, from outlier communities to idiosyncratic individuals. Best-known for ‘The Wolfpack’ – her Sundance Grand Jury Prize-winning cult classic documentary – Crystal’s latest project is the improvised dramatic picture ‘The Black Sea’ (co-directed with lead actor, Derrick B. Harden), which Metrograph recently cinematically released after attracting strong early plaudits.
‘Skate Kitchen’ Crystal’s initial follow-up to ‘The Wolfpack’ – a sincere depiction of female friendship among a young skater collective – was born of her Miu Miu short ‘That One Day’. The feature won acclaim for its spirited characterisation, vivacious aesthetic and documentary sensibility. She later directed a two-series continuation of Skate Kitchen in the guise of HBO’s ‘Betty’.
Crystal also helmed ‘SOPHIA’, a haunting feature documentary about a humanoid robot and its inventor, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival, before being picked up by Showtime.
