Justin Tipping
Justin Tipping is a writer-director from Berkeley, California, whose work blends lyrical realism with genre-bending storytelling. Known for his visually striking aesthetic, Tipping explores identity, power, and societal frameworks through intimate character studies shaped within meticulously composed visual worlds.
Tipping’s most recent feature film ‘HIM’, produced by Jordan Peele for Universal Pictures and Monkeypaw Productions, follows a rising-star quarterback whose future is upended after a career-altering injury.Through a surreal lens, Tipping transforms American football into a near-mythic world, where fandom carries cultlike intensity and players assume godlike stature. Featuring a cast including Marlon Wayans, Julia Fox, Tim Heidecker, Jim Jefferies, and Tierra Whack, ‘HIM’ examines ambition, identity, and the sacrifices demanded in the pursuit of greatness.
Tipping’s feature debut, ‘KICKS’ premiered to critical acclaim and established him as a distinctive new voice in American cinema. He has since directed and produced pilots and episodes across film and television, including ‘Joe vs Carole’, ‘Flatbush Misdemeanors’, ‘Twenties’, ‘Black Monday’, ‘The Chi’, ‘Dear White People’, ‘Run the World’, and ‘Dare Me’. His work on ‘Black Monday’ earned him an NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Directing in a Comedy Series.
As a writer, Tipping has developed projects with FX, Showtime, UCP, TriStar, Columbia Pictures, Universal, and Paramount. His short film ‘NANI’ won a Student Academy Award while he was earning his MFA at the American Film Institute Conservatory.
